Background: in the year 2109, scientists in the US made an accidental discovery during a experiment, which would have lasting effects in the decades to come.

Somehow, the experiment resulted in that a short-lived 'hole' was established between our reality and another. But while the hole existed only for a few seconds, it was long enough for something to be pulled through.

Only part of the object made it-- but much to the shock of those brought in to investigate the object, it was identified as part of a White Star spaceship. The significance of establishing brief contact with a universe thought to be fictional struck hard.

And it was decided that further studies should be made of what had happened, as it was thought that immense advantages in military technology might be made if it was possible to generate such holes between realities under controlled circumstances.

Then, in the year 2187, the process was perfected-- to the extent that a 'hole' could be made to last for as long as a full two minutes and without damaging anything that was pulled through. Certainly it took immense amounts of energy and what came through wasn't always usefull, but enough was to make the project expenses worthwhile.

All that changed when something horrific came through at the project's main site-- a creature only partially corporeal that proved quite capable of dealing with whatever the staff at the base threw at it. Then it began methodically explored outwards from the base in a widening circle. Those it did not kill, it left insane or altered into twisted versions of their former selves.

Within a few weeks however, it became quite clear that it would not be possible to deal with the creature by any means known to mankind. And therefore the leaders of the US turned to the secondary site in desperation-- hoping to be able to get something or someone that might help them.

So there's where we'll begin.

Original characters from any fictional, published world are welcome.

IC.

Within the huge, underground building of the second base, the keening sound of machines and the energy generating the 'hole' was almost unbearable. Slightly less fine tuned than the older base that was now offlimits, the stress as the hole was made to flux through countless realities on its search, was considerable.

In the past, they had mostly searched for inanimate objects, except for a few occations-- but today was different. Certainly there was technology out there that might be usefull, but with the speed with which the creature extended its range-- it would simply take too long to learn about a possible weapons uses and functions.

Suddenly the keen increased in strenght to a deafening shriek, and within the span of less than a minute-- it brought several someones through. How many worlds they had been taken from was impossible to tell without access to the monitoring computer.

However, that could be established later, not all that mattered was to try to establish contact with the newcommers-- to explain the situation to them and weed out those who might be hostile. Already weapon-systems were ready to be activated if neccessary, and well protected staff equiped with translators were approaching to greet the newcommers.

Tag anyone.

A white arrow flashed across the room and buried itself an inch into the metal wall. The elf it belonged to had been in the middle of battle. They had come so far he could see the gates of Uru'baen itself. They had known that if they reached the city they would have Galbatorix himself to contend with, but with the queen herself leading them they would have fought all seven of the wyrdfell without hesitation. As he had fired at a human soldier his target and the entire field had vanished.

He had the sharp pale features possessed by all his race and shoulder length black hair. His clothes were composed of a silvery cloth too fine to have been made by hand or machine, nor could the white bow in his hand have been anything but the dream of a great mind in this world.

Blue eyes watched those who approached with thinly veiled suspicion. Whatever magic had brought him here must have been beyond that of even queen Islanzadi. His first thought was of some trickery of Galbatorix but it was better to be sure first.

When the strangers reached him and the bizarre group he found himself with he bowed slightly with his hand over his chest. "Atra esterní ono thelduin," he said.

OOC: S'jahn and Eozyth is from a Dragonriders of Pern RP I play in, Nightshade Weyr. Eydrin and Truda are NPCs from a story I'm writing, set at Velgarth.

IC.
To say that S'jahn and Eozyth were startled when suddenly finding themselves in a huge and brightly lit room like nothing they had seen before, was an understatement. Eozyth was the first to recover from the brief spell of disorientation they had suffered though, and with a bugle-- the blue dragon spread his wings with a loud bugle.

He did remain where he was however, unsure about the strange situation and place they had appeared in, although he did keep a wary eye at the strangely dressed people approaching them. As he did with those standing nearby, some even stranger than those who seemed to be the residents of the place.

"Oh shards.." S'jahn muttered, feeling increasingly anxious as he looked around, each thing he set his eyes on seeming stranger than the last. He didn't dare look behind him and Eozyth again though, not after seeing that strange mist back there-- seeming to distort everything with those odd colors flashing through it every few seconds.

::This place doesn't feel nice at all, I do not like it:: Eozyth said, teeth partly bared as he surveyed his surroundings as well.

::I don't think that trying to go between would be a good idea, even if I would like to. Should I give them a scare?::
With a movement of his head, the blue dragon indicated the people approaching them.

S'jahn considered it for a few moments, but then he shook his head, he certainly didn't like the strange-looking devices held by the people at the other end of the room-- probably some kind of weapons he suspected. Part of him did really want to panic though, but he tried to ignore it. Right now Eozyth was calm, but knowing his friend of 11 turns-- he was well aware of that the blue would not hesitate to attack if he felt that they were really threatened.

"No, let's just wait and see what they want. If we are lucky, we might even get an explaination for how we came to be here, and why maybe" he said quietly, giving the blue's neck a light pat.

-----------------

Truda staggering under her for a few moments, Eydrin felt like she had just gone through a gate-- and she had to make a great effort not to be sick. As she did become aware of her surroundings though, she felt her eyes widen in surprise.

The place was larger than any room she had ever seen-- the walls seeming to be made of some kind of metal, lines with powerfull lamps that nearly dazzled her after she had been riding for hours at night. And for a few moments, before she could get her shields up, she was assaulted by a whirl of emotions and images.

Most of them she didn't really understand, but what she did sense made her quite certain of that the people approaching weren't meaning them any harm. Well, unless they found anyone to be a threat-- in such a case Eydrin suspected that the strangers were quite prepared to make sure that it wouldn't be able to do much damage if they could help it.

::Hmmm, I suspect that they may already have done something monumentally stupid. Their language is different, so I'm not certain about the details, but I believe that they have already pulled something quite dangerous through the gate-thing we just came through::

"Hoping for some help, are they?"

Turning her head to look at her Chosen with one blue eye, Truda nodded, ::I strongly suspect so. Now let's hear what they have to say, shall we?::

---------------------

By the time she came to a stop just a few meters from the nearest of those who had came through the 'hole', Irene strongly wished that she could have been just about anywhere else. Several of the arrivals appeared to be humans certainly, but there was also several who severely creeped her out.

That large, blue dragon for example-- plenty big enough to eat her if it wanted to.

And the translator device she had been equiped with, this close to the 'guests', the telempathic feedback made it feel like her brain was itching. If those scientist had improved it like they were claiming, she didn't want to think about how bad any of the older versions might have felt like.

Opening her mouth, she quickly closed it again as another deafening keen from the hole itself and the generators powering it warned her about that it was being shut down. Nearly thirty people and creatures had came through in all, so it was probably deactivated before a uncontrolled shutdown or powerloss occured.

"Umm..." she began, hoping that the translator worked as it should, "I'm Irene Handel, employed by the US army, I would like to welcome you all here and ask for forgiveness for pulling you here without leave. However, we do have a serious problem on our hands, that we hope that you may be willing and able to help us with. Once you all have gone through the required examination, you will have a full briefing on everything you need to know. Of-course we'll send you back home if you are unwilling to help".

Only now did the elf look back at the others, reaching out to assure himself that none of them were immediately dangerous. They had a dragon? Where the creature came from he didn't know, but that was unimportant. Dismissing the rider for the moment he repeated his bow to the dragon instead, uttering an elvish greeting.

He winced and scowled at the writhing cloud that seemed to be the source of the shriek stabbing into his pointed ears. "Hljödhr," he said under his breath. The sound stopped instantly.

He turned back to the human who had addressed them. She spoke in the ancient language, so he was justified in being mildly annoyed that she failed to introduce herself properly. It was easy to enter her mind, apparently they hadn't thought to provide a magician. So, she did not know the language, her words were translated by the device. Out of courteousy he went no further than to make certain her intentions were genuine.

Her language was not quite like the humans he had met but he found the words he needed in her mind. The way she worded her thoughts was just like an elf, very easy to avoid saying what she thought without actually lying. "I am Liduen Aiedail, battle mage of Du Weldenvarden," he said. The accent was strange, but he spoke perfectly in english.

OC- <sigh> Liduen is from Eragon... Christopher Paolini. I just read the second book.

OOC: sorry for jumping ahead, just thought it would be the easiest.

The creature is something of my own creation, think something similar to beings of the Cthulhu mythos. I'll let you know more about it as we continue.

IC.
"Anyone of them you recognize?"

Turning towards her as they lead the 'visitors' through the large main corridor to the room where they would be given the information needed, one of Irene's companions grinned teasingly. While she certainly hadn't cared much about fantasy stories and the like before, she was one of those who had taken a little time to read about most of the not too obscure books and movies of various genres however.

Irene snorted, but glanced at those following, some of which did make her a bit nervous despite that they didn't seem hostile at the moment or came with any demands about being sent back to their homes. However, that might come from some of them once they got over the shock of finding themselves in a world that was alien to them.

"Hmmm, that guy with the pointed ears might be an elf-- Lord of the Rings probably. Hard to say for certain though, a lot of authors have used that stereotype since Tolkien's books. That dragon and his rider may be from Pern, I don't know about that white horse with the blue eyes or its rider though".
She paused as she took another look, "there's that girl to the left who looks like she's taken straight out of a Harry Potter movie. I also think we have a vorlon, a Species 8472 and an asgard I think. No idea about the rest".
------------------------

Once everyone were inside, the room did feel a bit crowded, but fortunately not so much that it was truly uncomfortable. Certainly she wore a protective suit, but Irene would rather not risk getting any part of it torn. And she wouldn't feel truly safe until each of the visitors had been checked and cleared of potentially dangerous viruses and the like.

"Excuse me, but if everyone could pay attention to what will be shown on the screen behind me now. You will be shown what we are dealing with, before we'll provide the information we have been able to gather about it"

And once everyone seemed to be watching, she told the computer to play the surveyance immages they had been able to get from the main base at the time of the incident.

Immediately, the video of a hall almost exactly similar to the one the visitors had been brought into appeared. Right ahead was a distortion similar to the hole at the secondary base, seeming slightly larger and giving off a more muted keen as it shifted through countless worlds on its search.

Then however, there was a disturbance among the few staff members monitoring the hole from within the hall. And a few moments later, the source became visible to the cameras recording it-- something like a whirl of motes made out of light or shadow. Within seconds after that, it took on a form resembling a dragon, though made out of swirling light and darkness.

Due to the uncanny effects of its form, it was not possible to tell the exact size of the creature. Neither was it any telling its emotions or intensions, as no expression was visible on nearly incorporeal face. Within moment of it seeming to angle its head to look at the people in the hall however, their reactions were quite horrifying.

Some clawed at their faces and eyes as if trying to tear through to their brains, while other tried to flee-- tearing up their fingers and breaking bones as they tried to make their way out through closed doors. And all were keening or babbling-- the terrible sounds of someone reduced to mindless insanity.

The creature remained where it had materialized for a long time, seeming to watch as people died around it-- some even turning at each other to claw and tear each other appart. Only when there was nothing living left, did it move on, making its way out through the heavy, locked doors as if they were nothing.

After that, they had not been able to retrieve much of the data from the surveilance cameras, but what there was-- that was terrifying enough.

-------------------------

Having seen it before, Irene kept her back to the screen most of the time, but she still couldn't keep herself from shuddering violently. There was worse reports from the creature's later actions, but what she had just shown was horrible enough.

"That is the reason for why we brought you here. We have no ideas what it is, and it had proven quite resistant to anything we have used in our attempts to kill it.
Since it came through into our reality, it has slowly advanced outwards for several hundred miles in all directions from where it appeared. It is also intelligent, having proved so during our attacks on it and it is not only continuing what it began in the base, but physics seems to be going mad in its expanding area of influence.
If you know what it may be, please let us know. And we are all praying that some of you may have the will and ability to help us kill it..."

Liduen watched the video closely, trying with little success to see how the creature moved and look for weaknesses. He had never seen such a beast. This place was so strange, scrying on the past wasn't easy, and he had never seen it done this way.

"I will help you if you can offer some weapon in the war of Alagaesia," he said.

"Wait a minute 'ere!" a harsh voice that sounded very much like a variation of a cockney accent spoke up, shoving the elf uncerimoniously out of the way.

Its owner was a young looking man with dark hair cropped short and a hard looking face. One eye was bright blue, the other was an intimidating crimson. He'd had it altered so he could see in terms of magical energy. He wore a leather jacket, gloves missing the fingers, and generally fit the bill of a crook from London's east side. A lit cigarette hung from his mouth, he'd smoked three since getting here.

"I though' I'd stick 'round in case there were somethin' in it for me, but ain't nothin' worth gettin' killed over-" His teeth clacked as his mouth snapped shut. Curiously, Liduen had muttered something at exactly the same moment...

OC- Simon Hawke's Wizard of Fourth Street, I've done this character before in various incarnations, make i' worth 'is while and 'e'll do anythin' you want wink.gif

OOC: in the matter of what your characters may be interested in, there's more offered than what I mention in the post below-- so you're free to think of something else smile.gif

IC.
Irene nodded, such requests had been expected and she had been informed about how much help she had been authorized to offer.

"In the case of very low-tech worlds, there are limits to what we can offer at this time-- certainly nothing that can be reproduced or the effects of misuse being even worse than the conflict you may want it for. However, we are prepared to send a considerable force for long enough to deal with your enemies, before it will return here. In the case of more advanced worlds, we are willing to offer considerable quantities of gold or other metals that are of similar value to you. Another option is a trading treaty-- including any non-weapons found in our world or aquired from elsewhere".

Then she accessed the file containing data about some of what her employers were willing to offer, the information quickly appearing on the screen. Among the examples was a strike by fighter planes developed using technology copied from various ships and other vehicles taken through the hole. There was also extensive information about medicine, also various usefull non-weapon devices that could be reproduced fairly easily.

----------------------------

Although she had certainly seen her share of strange things during her time as a Herald, Eydrin felt rather stunned at some of the information she had read at the screen at the wall in front of her. Judging by what she had seen of the creature the resident people had pulled them into their world to fight, she was having serious doubts. Certainly she was a Herald Mage, but there was limits to what she and Truda could do, especially when she had no information about the availability of magic in this world.

But just the information in that medical encyclopedia, she was certain that the Healers at home might give their arms and legs from something like it..

::These people do need help, that is beyond doubt. We need to be carefull however, even if the gifts they are offering seem amazing certainly, who knows what impact they may have on Valdemar even if they are not weapons::

Eydrin gave a thoughtful nod at her Companion's words. All this seemed great despite of the risk, but they did need to be cautious.

"Helping seems the right thing to do certainly. But this isn't even our world, and we have no idea exactly what we'll be facing, other than that it sounds quite powerfull according to what we have been told" she said quietly.

::Obviously:: Truda said almost cheerfully, ::it would be my oppinion that we stick around for now and get a better idea of the situation::

Even Shurikan wouldn't be a match for the weapons he had just seen, they had definitely earned Liduen's help. He would make sure that even if he didn't survive help was sent to Alagaesia.

He moved away from the strangely dressed human beside him, it seemed almost as though being in his presence was draining his energy, and the elf was uncomfortably aware of his powerful shields. He must have recieved little if any real training, but he had some power in him.

------------------------------------------------

The offer of gold was enough to interest Nicholas. "'Ow much gold?" he asked. He had in fact for some time been feeding off the energy of everyone in the room. Their wide range of emotions made it too good to resist.

OOC: Not to late to join in is it. ^^ My characters an elite from Charby the Vampirate.

IC: 'Hey, let me through!' Kiara yelled, squeezing through the legs of the strange creatures. 'Will you be able to return us to the same point in time from which you took us?' She asked looking up at the woman. Kiara, being about 3"0' tall had craned her neck to look right at the woman's face.
Kiara looked like a normal 8-year-old human girl, except for the fact that her eyes were completely blue and her hair was a light shade of pink.

As several of the visitors agreed, Irene managed to relax slightly, glad that she had been able to convince some. It was too early to say if they would be usefull, but she certainly wouldn't underestimate any of them based on what she had seen of them so far. Still, there was still several that hadn't said much, so she would see if she could find out if they needed something more or would prefer to return back home asap.

Then she turned to Nicholas, "the equialent of one hundred kilograms of gold in our currency, to be used in one of our cities as you wish now. Another one hundred kilos in real gold if you agree to help but find that you is of no use. Five hundred kilos of gold or the equal value in something else if you have information or a skill that may help us get rid of the creature permanently".

However, the next question, that came from what appeared to be an eight years old girl, was a bit more difficult.
"The computers we keep here keep a database of co-ordinates and other data needed about each location we probe. Experiments have showed that there may be a slight drift forwards or backwards in time, but the worst we have experienced now when we have got the hand of things is four weeks. We don't expect to be off by more than a few hours or days when sending you back though".

Nicholas flicked the cigarette butt across the room and pointed with one finger as it fell. A narrow bolt of blue lightning lanced from his fingertip and it vanished.

"Yer got my attention ma'am," he said. "Nicholas Keaton, gen'leman thief, warlock, an' vampire. 'Ow's 'at for useful?"

He pulled another from his pocket and fire flared onto the tip as he inhaled.

Quietly thanking those who had agreed to at least see if they could help, Irene remained in the room while several of her companions escorted those who would rather return to their homes right away out of the room. Then she took a deep breath, gathering her thoughts before she spoke again.

"Each of you will be assigned a room or other suitable quarters here at the base now. So if you need to rest or need time to prepare, please do so-- you will be transported to a location closer to the current range of the target in four hours".
Having said that, she hoped that the staff at the base had been able to prepare accomodations that might suit the needs of each of the guests. That dragon thing would probably have to stay in one of the hangars, and she wasn't certain if there was any place that might suit the horse.

As for the rest who had offered to help if they could, some of them was even more alien, so she hoped that they would be letting the staff know if there was anything in particular that they would need.

-----------------

What happened next, did take the guards around the room quite by surprise despite of that they had been ready for some of the guests to prove hostile. As a girl at the back of the room suddenly seemed to shimmer and take the form of some monsterous hybrid of a human and a dragon with silver scales-- each guard was taken out by a bolt of lightning arching from one to the other.
Then it moved forwards to secure one of the weapons dropped by the downed guards, and reaching down to take one of the few guards not knocked out entirely-- it made its way towards the exit.

OOC: the creature would be a sivak draconian.

A creature resembling a black cat more the size of a dog yowled in suprise and arched its back, standing in front of a twelve year old girl who was a near perfect reproduction of her mother, tan skin and big brown eyes on a fey face, framed by pure white hair. Asilia reached out effortlessly with her mind and the doors slammed shut, shivering on the frame with the tremendous force. Taking one step further one of the weapons abandoned on the ground rose with the movement of her hand to aim at the head of the dragon thing.

"Bloody 'ell!" By simple sleight of hand rather than magic Nicholas produced seemingly from nowhere a switchblade that looked harmless by comparison. He leeched up the excess energy from the magic and made use of it by preparing his own spell.

With supernatural speed Liduen drew his bow and nocked an arrow, rattling off an incantation as he moved to protect Irene. Assuming the dragon-like creature could not resist his magic it would be tranquilized almost instantly. If the spell failed he would have to try another approach.

With an evil grin Kiara turned to face the dragon-like creature that was leaving, she pulled out here daggers (that were more like swords for her size). From there she disappeared, leaving a faint mist behind and reappeared in front of the closed doors, facing the dragon-like creature.

--------------------------------

An elf watched as the guards fell to the ground, Armiana went over to the closest fallen guard as the dragon-like creature retreated. The guard seemed to be fine, apart from the fact that they were unconscious and had a few burns on their bodies. She ran her hand over the burn, whilst muttering 'Waise heill', then watched as the burns healed.
It was now that she recognised the other elf who was in the room, but did not have much time to think of it as she moved on to check the other guards as the rest of the strange creatures seemed to be handling the dragon-like creature.
